Parish Information

The Parish Map shows the boundary administered by Huntington Parish Council.

Huntington, North Yorkshire, is a historic parish located just north of York, with roots stretching back to the medieval period. The name "Huntington" is derived from Old English, meaning "the settlement of the hunters," reflecting its early history as a rural community surrounded by woodland and open land used for hunting.

Huntington in North Yorkshire was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. At that time, it was part of the Bulford hundred in Yorkshire and had a recorded population of 11.4 households. The entry also mentions the presence of a church before the Norman Conquest, indicating an established community with religious significance. Additionally, the Domesday Book notes that Huntington had a mill, which contributed 400 eels as part of its payments

The Parish Church of All Saints in Huntington is a key historical landmark with deep roots in the community’s past. The church dates back to at least the 12th century, though much of its current structure reflects later medieval and Victorian-era restorations.

One of the most distinctive features of All Saints’ Church is its Norman origins, seen in the stonework and early architectural details. The church was historically linked to St. Mary's Abbey in York, one of the most powerful religious institutions in medieval England, meaning it played a role in the powerful monastic network of medieval Yorkshire. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, the church continued to serve the local community, adapting over the centuries. After the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII in the 16th century, much of the land was redistributed.

Inside, the church contains historical monuments and memorials, reflecting the lives of past parishioners and notable local figures. The churchyard also provides an insight into Huntington’s past, with gravestones dating back centuries.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Huntington evolved from a small agricultural village into a thriving suburban area as York expanded. The opening of transport links and the rise of industry led to increased development, though it still retains much of its historical character.

Today, Huntington is a mix of modern residential areas and historical landmarks, providing a glimpse into both its rural past and its development alongside the historic city of York. Huntington in 2021 had population of 9643, with the number of households being 4368, of these, 97.9% lived in households and 2.1% lived in communal establishments (https://www.ons.gov.uk/census)
